In this manual we give a short presentation of some numerical methods for the solution of 1D compressible fluid flow problems. We have structured the document in roughly three parts. In the first we give a broad description of the issues involved in the physical problem and in its numerical solution. In the second we give a detailed discussion of the numerical methods used, while in the last part we give details on the implementations of the latter in the library ShockLib.

The numerical methods described here are specialized to 1D problems. However, many facets of their behavior will be mantained in their 2D and 3D counterparts. Thus, we believe that the experience acquired by playing with the interactive examples of this book will be of some general interest.

The interactive sections of this book allow the reader to start a simulation on our server. The data resulting from the simulation is shipped back to Mosaic and, if the latter is properly configured, the data will be shown on the reader workstation by a specialized viewer, YXPLOT.

Our implementation of an active book is still under development.
